You may have seen the news a couple of months ago about the "PWN to OWN" challenge sponsored by TippingPoint in which a Windows Vista laptop, a MacBook Air, and a Linux laptop were to be given away (along with nice cash prizes) to the hackers who could be the first to break into them. The MacBook Air fell first (so very tempting a target it was), and then the Vista laptop, but the Linux laptop was never breached.

Well, the vulnerability that doomed the Vista laptop was in Adobe Flash. The bug was responsibly reported to Adobe, who fixed it in [more ...]

After parting ways and leaving the City of Heroes/City of Villains franchise in the hands of NCSoft (along with nearly all of the developers to form the new NCSoft NorCal shop), we now know how Cryptic Studios has been keeping itself busy.

Apparently it's not Star Trek Online, as had been rumored after Perpetual Entertainment shut down and gave up the Trek license to an unnamed developer in North California.

It's another superhero MMORPG.

It's Champions Online, based on the Champions pen & paper RPG first published in 1981. Cryptic Studios hasn't merely licensed Champions from Hero Games, it has acquired the complete intellectual [more ...]

HD-DVD Surrenders, Blu-ray Wins Format War II
A report by WB

It's official. The waiting is over, and the winner is Blu-ray. Today Toshiba announced that it will cease developing, manufacturing, and selling HD-DVD players by the end of March. For the past two years most of us have awaited the outcome of a format war that drew comparisons to the great format war 30 years ago when VHS fought Betamax.

The turning point of Blu-ray's victory was just before the CES in January when Warner Bros dropped the bomb, announcing that it would no longer release movies on HD-DVD. Warner had been [more ...]
