You may have seen the news a couple of months ago about the "PWN to OWN" challenge sponsored by TippingPoint in which a Windows Vista laptop, a MacBook Air, and a Linux laptop were to be given away (along with nice cash prizes) to the hackers who could be the first to break into them. The MacBook Air fell first (so very tempting a target it was), and then the Vista laptop, but the Linux laptop was never breached.

Dungeons & Dragons Creator, Gary Gygax, Dies

Gary Gygax, cocreator of the pen-and-paper game that directly spawned Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights and influenced the entire RPG genre, has died at age 69.

Before there were any role-playing video games, there were pen-and-paper role-playing games. This week brings the sad news that one of the founders of the most famous analog RPG has passed way. After parting ways and leaving the City of Heroes/City of Villains franchise in the hands of NCSoft (along with nearly all of the developers to form the new NCSoft NorCal shop), we now know how Cryptic Studios has been keeping itself busy.

Apparently it's not Star Trek Online, as had been rumored after Perpetual Entertainment shut down and gave up the Trek license to an unnamed developer in North California.

It's another superhero MMORPG.

It's official. The waiting is over, and the winner is Blu-ray. Today Toshiba announced that it will cease developing, manufacturing, and selling HD-DVD players by the end of March. For the past two years most of us have awaited the outcome of a format war that drew comparisons to the great format war 30 years ago when VHS fought Betamax.
